Soldering is not a black art, as long as the iron you use is up to the job...(ie dont try and solder battery wires on with a 25w iron) keep you're tip clean "ooer" and tin everything, use flux even if you are using fluxed solder, it lets the solder flow, use a decent stand for your iron, it lets the iron heat up as you get stuff organised and helps prevent burn accidents, and get a small vise or some vice grips, it's easier than growing a third hand...

I currently use three irons...
I have a 40w for doing light stuff, wiring etc
I have a 75w for building and repairing battery packs, dont suppose it'll get a huge ammount of use in the future... (Lipo)
I also have a 12v iron of unknown wattage, but its incredibly efficient and would solder a girder together...
I would go for a 40w, it will do most jobs, buy a decent one like a Weller and get decent solder and a small tub of flux paste, Gibbs tools on King Street stock Weller.

Rc Crafty, the general hardware store in Inverurie (just near the SPice of Life) has some irons in, I think I got a 50W one for £8 and it is fine, they also do a beat of a 100w one (or they did), I have one but it melts the tips after a while!!
